AVIRIS FTP/WWW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Last Changed: July 27, 1995

The AVIRIS Gallery Opens (7/27/95)

Due to popular demand after the JPL Open House this July, we have begun work on a gallery of AVIRIS images. This is just the first cut, so more images will be added as we get the time to put them there.

An Order Form...sort of (6/27/95)

We are not running an HTTP server yet, so we don't have any online HTML forms, but we do have a simple ASCII form for ordering data. You can download it, fill it in, and send it to avorders@ophelia.jpl.nasa.gov.

Have it Your Way (5/26/95)

We are having some second thoughts about the format of the quicklook images. We made them into flat binary files so that anyone could read them, but now we realize that some standard image format, such as GIF, might be better. This is especially true in light of the overwhelming spread of World Wide Web browsers. Please mail us at av_tech@ophelia.jpl.nasa.gov and give us your opinions.

How do you do it? (5/26/95)

Assuming we stick with the flat binary format, we would like to know how to display the quicklook images directly from the various Web browsers on the various platforms (Unix, Windows, Mac, etc.). If you can do the display, mail us at av_tech@ophelia.jpl.nasa.gov and tell us how you did it so we can make that information available to everyone.

1995 quicklooks available! (5/22/95)

AVIRIS began the 1995 flight season on the 9th of May. Quicklooks from the science runs will now be located in the pub/95qlook directory.

New Disk (5/22/95)

The disk that ophelia kept rejecting has been replaced. In theory we should be up most of the time now. Write to av_tech@ophelia if you're having trouble connecting.

1994 calibration files available (2/13/95)

The radiometric calibration, spectral calibration, and on_board calibrator files are now available, in both binary and ASCII formats, in the pub/cal_files_94 directory.

Updated documentation for PG tapes (2/13/95)

The documentation pack that we send with our data tapes (Product Generation, or PG, tapes) is now available. Look for files in the pub/docs directory that begin with "pg_doc_file," or access the symbolic links to those files (they begin with doc_file) in the cal_files_XX directories. These files are dated, so be sure to read the file that corresponds to your data.

Updated Navigation data for '94 qlooks (2/9/95)

The navigation data (latitudes, longitudes, times) in the '94 qlook index has up until now been "best guesses." Now we have extracted the nav data from the AVIRIS data and put them in the index. For some runs, the data was corrupted or missing, and in those cases the "best guess" data remains.

Online viewing now available (2/7/95)

To view the online quicklooks once you have them downloaded, you must load them into some display software. If you have xv (2.21 or later), then the command:

echo "P5 307 1536 255 " | cat - <filename> | xv -

will convert the file temporarily to PGM format and display it.

Similarly, you can view the files from your Web browser by properly configuring your .mailcap and .mime.types files. For NCSA Mosaic, add the following line to your .mailcap file (note that this is one line, even if your browser wraps it):

image/x-aviris; echo "P5 307 1536 255 " | cat - %s | xv -

and add the following line to your .mime.types file:

image/x-aviris aql

Then exit your browser and restart it. Now when you click on one of the .aql files it will treat the file in the same manner as a GIF image. You will need to set your browser to load to local disk to transfer the file as before.

Thanks to Quinn J. Hart at UC Davis for the conversion command.

Online quicklooks renamed (2/7/95)

The online quicklook images have been renamed, as of February 7th, 1995. No longer are they ".bin" files. Instead, all quicklooks have the suffix ".aql" for Aviris QuickLook. The reason for this change is to avoid confusion with other ".bin" files on the Web, especially in light of the other announcement.
